July 13, 2010 Council Meeting Minutes

President Brian Kalab called the meeting to order.

Present: Joe Kutzke, Brian Kalab, Jim Weisenbach, Jennifer Tanner, Butch Martin, Jeff Whitehead, Jill Maas, Rhonda Moen, Roy Wenzel, Kylene Binder, and Kathy Torgerson

Absent: Dave VanBeek, Michele Somogy, and Gretchen Mitchell

Kylene Binder opened with devotion and prayer.

The meetings agenda was approved.

Minutes for the June 2, June 8, and June 15, 2010 council meetings were approved.

Pastor’s Report:
Pastor Kutzke challenged the council to answer the question: How does God see us? A discussion of worship as personal or as corporate was held.

It is hard to be Christian in this world. We need to witness with our own lives.

Vision Team:
The vision team will present first at the June 18 Congregational Meeting. Exciting things are happening and are moving forward. The four task force facilitators will give examples of how to meet the four goals.

How can we try to turn negativity around? Remember to direct issues to the right person.

August 23rd is the target date to have the ways and steps to take to accomplish each goal.

Treasurer s Report:
Butch Martin reported that as of June 30th, we were about $80,000 in the hole. Expenses are still being held down. We are not officially in the red because of the pay-off check from copier company.

Jeff Whitehead shared that we got about $2,000 from Thrivent. Vandals are to pay $2,200 in restitution by September 1st. There is an IRS refund of $4,800 of which $2,400 will be for Pastor Kutzke due to an error of overpaying social security. Beginning in September, the Finance committee will meet the Sunday before Council meeting. To save $800, we can move to individual ‘Envelopes For Giving’ in the pews instead of the yearly booklets. The first two weeks of July we were short about $2,000 which is better than the last few months. A question about how we track endowments was answered that it is tracked separately from Benevolence. $23 background check moved from Personnel to Youth.

Committee reports
Rhonda Moen reported that a community member is willing to cut grass for hay on the Wilcox property.

We did not get the grant for Allen Creek restoration, but will maintain plants for a year.

Jim would like names of people to serve on personnel committee.

Suggestion for having a worship service and picnic on the Wilcox property on September 5th or 12th.

Property and Grounds not soliciting logging on the peninsula property at this time.

Congregational Meeting July 18th
Logistics and agenda were discussed.

Job Description for Senior Pastor

Jim shared that there was no formal job description for Senior Pastor, and by creating one, it will benefit the job description for an associate pastor. After Jim presented the job description, Council members recommended some changes to the document. Jim moved to accept the Senior Pastor job description as amended. Motion was seconded and carried.

Jill Maas will open in August.

The council closed in prayer led by Pastor Kutzke.

Respectfully submitted,

Jennifer J. Tanner
